Bandung is a major education and creative centre, known for its universities, cafés, food, design, fashion and music scenes. Students can explore the art deco buildings and independent businesses around Braga Street, experience the city’s markets and neighbourhoods, or spend time in its many social and creative spaces. Located in the West Java highlands, Bandung also offers a cooler climate and access to volcanic landscapes, tea-growing areas and mountain destinations beyond the city.
Indonesia
Why study in Indonesia?
Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago, home to one of Southeast Asia’s most diverse cultures and spanning over 17,000 islands. It offers affordable cost of living, a growing number of English-taught programs, and the chance to combine study with easy access to natural wonders and historic sites.
From Bali's beaches to Java's volcanoes and Sumatra's rainforests, all set within a rich mix of cultures and languages.
Many universities now offer English-taught programs for international students.
Tuition and everyday expenses are among the most affordable in Southeast Asia.

Essential study information
Visas: what you will need
International students studying in Indonesia for more than 60 days need a Limited Stay Visa (VITAS) – most commonly the E30B (Higher Education) visa for degree-seeking students, or an E30 visa for shorter non-degree study.
Before you can apply, your Indonesian institution must first secure a Study Permit on your behalf from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology.
Once the Study Permit and visa authorisation (sometimes called a Telex) are issued, you apply for the VITAS at an Indonesian embassy or consulate in your home country. To apply, you will typically need:
- An offer or acceptance letter from an accredited Indonesian institution
- A valid passport, generally with at least 18-24 months’ validity remaining
- Proof of financial means to support yourself during your studies
- A signed sponsor or guarantor letter (often from your institution, unless you hold a full scholarship)
- Passport photographs and a completed application form
After you arrive in Indonesia, your institution’s international office helps you convert the VITAS into a KITAS (Limited Stay Permit) – a card confirming your legal right to stay for the length of your studies. It is typically valid for 6-12 months at a time and renewable for up to 2 years. Before you leave Indonesia for the last time, KITAS holders need to apply for an Exit Permit.
Work rights
A Student KITAS does not allow you to take up paid work in Indonesia – this applies regardless of institution or course, and is strictly enforced. If you want to work legally, you will need a separate Employment KITAS sponsored by an employer.
There is also no dedicated post-study work visa: graduates wanting to stay and work in Indonesia need to secure a job offer and have an employer sponsor the appropriate work permit (IMTA) and KITAS through the standard immigration process.
Cost of living
Indonesia is one of the most affordable study destinations in the region. Most international students can cover living costs on roughly IDR 6,000,000-10,000,000 (around USD 380-640) a month. This varies significantly by city – Jakarta and Bali are noticeably more expensive than smaller cities like Bandung, Yogyakarta or Malang.
Student visa rules generally require proof of enough funds to support yourself, in addition to the tuition and visa costs.
Health and safety
Healthcare costs (particularly in major cities) can be significant, and public healthcare infrastructure varies between regions. Make sure you have valid health insurance covering the full length of your stay. Many institutions require proof of insurance as part of enrolment, and can advise on providers with good coverage in major cities and more remote areas.
DLI has a Wellbeing Hub, offering a range of health and safety services. They also have dedicated student support teams to ensure that you have the guidance you need throughout your learning journey.
