Team IMPACT: students at WLIC giving back to their communities

Wilfrid Laurier International College (WLIC) is proud to introduce Team IMPACT, a new student leadership initiative designed to foster volunteerism, community engagement, and meaningful experiences beyond the classroom.

The Team IMPACT program was created to support international students as they begin building their lives in Canada: offering opportunities to gain valuable local experience while making a positive contribution to the community. For many students, this type of experience is essential not only for personal growth, but also for strengthening resumes and preparing for future co-op and career opportunities.

“We started this program because we understand how important local Canadian experience is for our students’ lives and future career development,” said Chi ZhangStudent Success Advisor at WLIC (pictured above, right). “It’s a meaningful opportunity for students to build connections, develop transferable skills such as communication and teamwork, and contribute to organisations that provide important services in our community.”

Giving back and building belonging in community

Since its launch, Team IMPACT members have already begun making a difference. Students volunteer regularly at a local homeless shelter, where they prepare meals, serve dinner, and assist with clean-up. These hands-on experiences provide meaningful interaction with the local community while building confidence and practical skills.

For student participant Mir Khoja, the impact has been both immediate and personal. “I’ve always liked helping people, and when I learned about the opportunity to support a shelter, I applied right away,” he shared. “Seeing people smile when we help them – it feels amazing.”

Beyond the direct impact of volunteering, students are finding a deeper sense of belonging.

“Volunteering has helped me connect with the local community a lot,” Khoja added. “It has made me feel more at home in Canada and helped me develop my speaking and social skills.”

What’s next for Team Impact?

Looking ahead, Team IMPACT is expanding its efforts through upcoming fundraising initiatives, with plans to support additional local organisations, including the community food bank. The program also recognises student contributions through a WLIC-issued Volunteer Certificate, awarded to those who complete a combination of volunteer shifts and program engagement sessions.

Early student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants highlighting both the professional and personal value of the experience. More than just a volunteer initiative, Team IMPACT is quickly becoming a hub for connection, friendship, and shared purpose.

As it continues to grow, Team IMPACT stands as a powerful example of how WLIC is supporting international students, not only in their academic journeys, but in becoming active, engaged members of the communities they now call home.
