Study in Chelmsford, the award-winning nightlife city

We’re pleased to reveal that Chelmsford has been recognised for its “outstanding” nightlife for 11 years in a row. Students studying at ARU College will have access to Anglia Ruskin University Chelmsford campus once completing their studies (subject to field of studies).

Chelmsford has been accredited with a Purple Flag for its fantastic evening and nightlife. Purple Flag aims to raise the standard and broaden the appeal of town and city centres between 5 pm and 5 am.

The city was found to have a high coordination of services and “above standard” in all five of the Purple Flag categories. It was assessed in categories such as:

  • visitor experience
  •  safety and services
  • transport and movement
  • range of venues and activities available
  • overall appeal as a stimulation destination

Recognised as a safe and welcoming city, the panel also noted Chelmsford’s collaboration on joint projects like “Chelmsford’s Women’s Safety Charter”, launched in 2022.

Furthermore, the refurbishment of Chelmsford’s Theatre was praised. The city was commended for its great mixture of chain and independent restaurants and establishments.
