ICM alumni sparkle in student leadership at the University of Manitoba
The International College of Manitoba (ICM) continues to shine as a beacon for developing future leaders. This month, three ICM alumni were elected to key positions on the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) executive for the 2025/2026 academic year.
- Temiloluwa Oyewole was elected as the Black Students’ Representative. Her journey from Nigeria to UM began with the supportive environment at ICM, where she was active as a student leader.
- Mahfuz Haque will serve as the International Students’ Representative. Like Temiloluwa, Mahfuz’s leadership journey was shaped by his time at ICM, where he served as a student leader. Originally from Bangladesh, Mahfuz’s leadership journey was shaped by his time at ICM, where he served as a student leader.
- Hannah Le, an ICM alumna from Vietnam, was elected as Vice-President Student Life.
ICM’s legacy of student leadership
These students are just the latest in ICM’s growing legacy of alumni involvement in student governance at the University of Manitoba.
Tracy Karuhogo, an ICM alumna, served as UMSU President in 2023/2024, and many other alumni have taken on leadership roles in various student groups and community initiatives throughout Winnipeg.

ICM provides a nurturing environment that helps international students adjust to a new academic system, cultural setting, and lifestyle. The smaller class sizes and accessible instructors at ICM allow students to build confidence in their studies before transitioning to larger university classes. The comprehensive support system, including academic advisors, student mentors, and caring faculty, helps students develop both academically and personally.
“Studying at ICM was a transformative experience that made my transition to university in Canada much smoother,” Temiloluwa reflects.
The leadership opportunities available at ICM play a crucial role in developing the skills necessary for student governance.
“ICM helped me find my voice as a leader. The experience of engaging with diverse students, organising initiatives, and advocating for my peers gave me the confidence to take on larger roles. The leadership skills I developed at ICM laid the foundation for my campaign and my ability to represent students effectively at the Student Union.”
In her new role, Temiloluwa aims to strengthen the sense of community among Black students and collaborate with Black-owned businesses and community organisations.
“I want to create impactful events, improve student support services, and collaborate with Black-owned businesses and community organisations. Winning this position was a humbling experience, and I’m excited to use this platform to make meaningful change.”
Looking Ahead
The success of Temiloluwa, Mahfuz, and Hannah in their UMSU elections demonstrates ICM’s ongoing commitment to developing well-rounded students who are prepared not only for academic success but also for leadership roles in their communities.
Their achievements highlight ICM’s effectiveness in nurturing future leaders who will make meaningful contributions to student life and advocacy at the University of Manitoba.
