From THPC to THUAS: a smooth transition to Dutch higher education

For students considering whether a pathway program is the right first step before starting university in the Netherlands, the experience of The Hague Pathway College (THPC) alumna Princess Aubynn provides a clear insight.

Princess joined THPC in January 2026 to prepare for her studies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences (THUAS), which will begin in September. Like many international students, she initially expected the pathway program to be a conventional pre-university education preparation for the Dutch university system, where students read notes, pass exams, and move on. Instead, she found that it offered far more than a transitional pre-university experience.

Reflecting on her journey, Princess shared: “THPC has been so much more than a starting line. I can say this wholeheartedly: not coming to this college would’ve greatly altered my university journey in the Netherlands.”

During her six months at THPC, Princess took part in group projects alongside classmates from a wide range of cultural backgrounds, gaining firsthand experience of the teamwork and intercultural collaboration expected at Dutch institutions. She also completed both practical and academic research projects that strengthened her academic writing and critical thinking. Outside the classroom, a full calendar of events, from beach parties to board game nights, helped her build a support network in a new country.

Princess believes the greatest impact of the programme extended beyond academics. Arriving with concerns about studying abroad, she completed the programme with confidence and lasting friendships.

“My six-month period here has cleared the anxiety I had towards studying abroad, instilled confidence and given me friends I can rely on instead of having to face everything alone. It’s also given me a sheer peace of mind I’m certain I wouldn’t have if I never clicked apply,” she said.

For students wishing to study in the Netherlands, Princess’ experience is a strong example of what a pathway program can offer beyond exam preparation: a structured, supported first step that eases both the academic and personal adjustment of studying abroad.
