Expanding Horizons: Agricultural and Food Sciences at ICM & the University of Manitoba
When many students and families hear “agriculture,” they often picture farming but the reality is far broader. A degree from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences offers a dynamic range of programs that open doors to diverse, high-demand careers across science, business, health, and environmental sectors.
The International College of Manitoba’s International Year One (UTP Stage II): Agricultural and Food Sciences program is equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree from the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences.
A sector full of opportunity
The agrifood industry is one of Canada’s largest employers, with over 550,000 people working across the sector. In Manitoba, 1 in 10 jobs is connected to agrifood, spanning fields such as food production, biotechnology, logistics, finance, and environmental services. Many roles, such as nutritionists, lab technicians, product development scientists, and climate change specialists, extend well beyond traditional farming.
Programs that go beyond expectations
Students can choose from several Bachelor of Science programs, including:
- Agroecology – Sustainable agriculture and environmental solutions
- Agronomy – Crop and soil science
- Plant Biotechnology – Genetics, lab research, and innovation
- Animal Systems – Animal health, nutrition, and welfare
- Agribusiness – Finance, marketing, and management in agrifood
- Food Science – Product development, safety, and processing
- Human Nutritional Sciences – Nutrition, public health, and dietetics
These programs lead to careers with strong demand, both in Manitoba and globally.
Hands-on learning
A key advantage of the faculty is its emphasis on experiential learning. Students gain real-world experience through:
- Co-op placements and summer jobs
- Research opportunities with faculty
- Opportunities in labs, greenhouses, and field environments
As shared by ICM alumnus and current UM student Moussa Yaya Mahamat, hands-on experience can begin as early as second year. As an agronomy student with an interest in genetics, Moussa is already conducting research on improving canola crops and their fungus resistance, demonstrating how quickly students can get involved in meaningful, industry-relevant projects.
Strong career outcomes
Graduates are highly employable, often receiving job offers before completing their degrees. The faculty’s strong industry connections with organisations like Nutrien, Agriculture and Agri Food Canada, and Bayer Crop Science help students build networks and launch their careers.
Key takeaways
The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is an excellent option for students interested in science, sustainability, business, or health, especially those seeking practical experience, strong job outcomes, and diverse career paths.
Encourage students to look beyond traditional assumptions. This is an industry with global impact, innovation, and opportunity.
