English learning beyond the classroom with Hawthorn-Melbourne’s HAP program
At Hawthorn-Melbourne, the Hawthorn Activity Program (HAP) has been thoughtfully designed to support students’ social interactions and personal growth in an encouraging environment. This program aims to build students’ confidence while helping them develop a strong social framework during their studies abroad.
HAP is divided into three engaging streams, each targeting a unique aspect of life and interaction in Melbourne:
- Hawthorn CULTURAL
Experience life like a local and be embraced by Melbourne’s rich cultural tapestry.
- Hawthorn ACTIVE
Step out of the comfort zone with opportunities to try new activities and stay active.
- Hawthorn SOCIAL
Meet new friends and build lasting connections in a supportive community.
With spring in full bloom in Melbourne, the October calendar has been filled with exciting activities that take full advantage of the city’s sunny weather. One of the standout events was a visit to the Heavenly Queen Temple in Footscray, where students had an unforgettable experience exploring this magnificent cultural landmark. They learned about its rich history, fascinating stories, and the traditions it honours. The day was not only educational but also deeply inspiring, fostering a stronger appreciation for harmony and respect.
Another highlight was a lively day at the Boat House, where students enjoyed the beautiful surroundings, soaked up the sunshine, and shared plenty of laughter with friends. The outing offered a relaxed and enjoyable environment to practise English naturally while building social connections.
Melbourne’s sun-filled months have also opened up exciting opportunities for Hawthorn-Melbourne’s English for High School teachers to take learning out and about around the city. Alongside excursions to the National Gallery of Victoria and Melbourne Sea Life Aquarium, students embarked on a memorable bus trip to Sovereign Hill. This immersive experience brought their Australian Studies lessons to life, allowing them to step back into 1800s Victoria through authentic gold rush town settings, mine tours, and engaging presentations.
At Hawthorn-Melbourne, learning English is a holistic journey—one that blends education with culture, activity, and social connection to create meaningful and lasting experiences. Each month, these experiences are brought to life through the HAP Calendar. Be sure to check it regularly to stay up-to-date with the latest activities and events.
