ECC brings Nepali students together following Nepal floods
Edith Cowan College (ECC) hosted a gathering for Nepali students on 9 September, following the devastating floods that struck Nepal on 26 August. The floods affected communities across the Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, causing significant loss of life and widespread devastation. For many Nepali students studying at ECC, the disaster has been deeply personal, with family members, friends and communities impacted by the tragedy.
The gathering was organised by ECC’s newly established Student Life team, with support from colleagues in Student Academic Services, to provide an opportunity for students to connect, share their experiences and support one another. Six students attended the informal event, held in the College’s outdoor grass area, where they enjoyed refreshments and conversation in a welcoming environment. Two staff members from Nepal also joined the gathering, alongside colleagues from across the College.
Academic Director Rob Ellis acknowledged the impact of the disaster on the Nepali community and reassured students that they have the support of the College during this difficult time. Student Life Manager and Counsellor Vanessa Cronje and Student Life Officer Vasi Zaros offered support and shared information about wellbeing services available to students. Student Learning Advisor Dr Shankar Dhakal, who is originally from Nepal, shared his own perspective and helped create a comfortable space for students to talk about how they and their families were coping in the aftermath of the floods. At the conclusion of the gathering, students were provided with food and grocery items to take home, including oats, canned goods, fruit, cereal and nut bars.
While the floods occurred thousands of kilometres away, their impact has been felt within the ECC community. The gathering served as a reminder that international students are not alone during times of crisis and that support extends beyond the classroom. It also reflected ECC’s commitment, and the wider Navitas commitment, to fostering a caring, connected and inclusive community where students feel supported through both challenges and successes.
ECC’s Student Life team was established this year to strengthen the integration of student wellbeing, academic support and engagement services across the College.
