Deakin College welcomes new initiative to support staff wellbeing

On Monday, 13 April, a free lunch initiative for staff was held at Deakin College’s Burwood and Waurn Ponds campuses. Delivered in partnership with the Sikh Interfaith Council of Victoria (SICV), the lunch offered simple, nourishing vegetarian meals prepared through traditional langar services by the Blackburn and Geelong gurdwaras.

The program launched on a significant day called Vaisakhi, a day where the Sikh community worldwide gathers to celebrate community spirit, progressive thinking, and the harmonious integration of spiritual and physical practices.

The free lunch program will be delivered to staff every Monday to encourage community connection, support wellbeing, and strengthen partnerships across the college.

In addition, the college’s Burwood and Geelong campuses continue to run a breakfast program on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 am to 11:30 am that offers a range of healthy options, including toast, toasted sandwiches, cereal, yoghurt, fruit, hot beverages, juices, and seasonal items such as hot curries and Bircher muesli.

This initiative was first launched in 2023, and due to its popularity, the service has increased the number of weekly breakfasts. From this month, two breakfasts will be offered each week.

In one day alone, 160 students took advantage of the free breakfast at the Burwood campus!

In addition to breakfast, students at the Waurn Ponds and Waterfront campuses can also access free tea and coffee stations Monday to Friday near the reception areas. These refreshment stations provide a welcoming environment for relaxation, informal interaction with staff, and a practical cost-saving benefit.

These initiatives are all supported by Bupa (private health insurance).

Deakin College also supports students through its Foodbank initiative, which provides access to essential food items for those experiencing financial hardship. The foodbank helps ensure students have reliable access to basic groceries, reducing food insecurity and supporting their ability to focus on their studies.

The service is offered in a discreet and supportive environment as the college continues to promote inclusivity and student wellbeing.
