Celebrating Africa Day at Curtin College

Curtin College recently embraced Africa Day with a vibrant on-campus celebration, bringing students and staff together in a powerful display of unity, culture, and community spirit.

The event’s highlight was an interactive African drumming workshop that invited students from all backgrounds to participate. The vibe was electric as students drummed, laughed, and embraced the rhythm together, creating moments of joy and connection that transcended cultural boundaries. One student captured the spirit of the day and said, “It was vibrant and fantastic, thank you so much. (I) had so much fun!” The event drew a strong turnout from African students, many of whom shared how much it meant to them to see their culture celebrated and embraced. Several commented that the event made them feel at home, seen, and valued within the Curtin College community.

After the drumming workshop, everyone was invited to enjoy authentic African cuisine, which provided a chance to share stories and explore culture through food. Students from diverse nationalities joined in, learning more about African traditions and trying new dishes. The college also welcomed the Curtin African Students Association (CASA) members, strengthening ties between Curtin College and Curtin University while reinforcing the importance of community support for international students.

These cultural celebrations are just one way Curtin College supports student well-being, fosters belonging, and promotes a rich, inclusive learning environment. Curtin College staff were present throughout the event to show their support, contributing to the warm and inclusive environment.

“Events like Africa Day are an important part of the student journey,” said Quentin Derrick, College Director and Principal. “They bring people together, celebrate culture, and help our students feel truly at home in Perth.”

Curtin College is proud to offer a welcoming and supportive pathway to Curtin University, with many initiatives that enhance the overall student experience, both academically and socially.
