Max (Chenzhe) Wang is from China, and started his higher education studies online with Eynesbury College in 2020 during the COVID pandemic. After completing his English course, he went on to complete his foundation program before transitioning to a diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at The University of Adelaide where he is a current student living in Adelaide.

In his free time Max now supports other international students who are new to Australia and are starting their studies at Eynesbury College – meeting them at Adelaide Airport, Max helps them settle into their new life in Adelaide.

My ability has been recognised by my teachers, by other staff members, and being able to represent the Navitas student body itself, it’s a pretty great achievement for me.

Hi, my name is Chenzhe Wang, my preferred name is Max, and I’m from China.

I started Eynesbury College in 2020, during COVID, first started the English course and then I finished my foundation program, and then transitioned to a diploma. That’s where I am right now, in the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

I spent two months researching the key factors and I decided to study at Eynesbury College. First of all, it is the only college in South Australia that provides the triple E degree, the pathway to Uni Adelaide, and second, it’s in the city, it’s close to everywhere, so it’s very convenient for me.

The third I would say, it’s the staff member. I was just so impressed and we’re just like a family, I love them so much. During COVID, they provide me a lot of support because I was really upset – I couldn’t make friends in real life because everything was online. I wasn’t happy. And the staff, they check in with me every day. That really make a big difference.

Once I arrived they show me around during their free time. They spent their weekend time and say, hey Max (and my classmates), let’s take you to some hiking spots around Adelaide. It’s the small things that really makes a big difference.

You come to a new country, you don’t know anything about this country, and Eynesbury is very caring for you. They provide all the information you need so that you can smoothly transit to university. Because in university everything is independent, and without Eynesbury’s pathway, it’s just really hard because uni everything is on your own, but in Eynesbury they guide you.

So after that I decided also to support other students as well. I go to Adelaide Airport, international arrivals, I catch other international students who also study at Eynesbury College, to give them support because I know what it felt like. You come here, totally new, no family here, everything’s scary – so I can finally do something to support other students as well.

My suggestions to the following Navitas pathway students – it’s important to ask for help when you actually need help. It’s important to seek for clarification sometimes, don’t just assume things will work out, you have to ask for clarification. Join the student events – that’s important, because if you’re going to stay here for a long time, you’re going to know the local cultures and how other cultures work.

I will also advise just keep trying, build up your resilience. This is really important. At first I failed a course and then once I came to Adelaide I tripled my scores and I maintained the highest scores in our course at Eynesbury College.

So don’t let one failure define you, let it teach you so that you can improve in the future. That’s really important.
