Building culture at Curtin College, one brick at a time

Curtin College’s staff recently participated in a half-day Culture Check-In Workshop designed to strengthen connections, encourage collaboration, and spark new ideas across teams.

Led by Curtin College Director and Principal Quentin Derrik, the workshop used the innovative LEGO® Serious Play method, a hands-on and creative approach to problem-solving and reflection. Staff members were invited to build personal metaphors for their roles, create shared models to represent the college teams, and reflect on the type of support they can offer one another to enhance how they work and live together.

The workshop was filled with play, creativity, and meaningful conversations that deepened staff’s understanding of each other’s roles and how they interconnect. Feedback from staff was overwhelmingly positive:

“This was a great chance to connect with others and gain new perspectives,” said Raissa Tordin, Student Experience Coordinator.

“It was a fun and creative way to see how we all contribute to the college’s success,” added Mujahid Ali, Engineering teacher.

“Using Legos brought creativity to the forefront and helped us share our values, identify gaps, and look for improvements,” shared Dr Elsamaul Elhebir, Program Manager of Health Science.

By combining creative thinking with open dialogue, Curtin College continues to build a workplace where collaboration, wellbeing, and shared purpose thrive — brick by brick.
