UPIC alumni lead the way as the SU President at the University
More than half of all Student Union (SU) Presidents at the University of Plymouth over the past decade began their academic journey at University of Plymouth International College (UPIC). This remarkable achievement speaks volumes about the determination of UPIC’s students and the exceptional support provided by the college staff.
Each year, students across the University of Plymouth campus elect a new SU President—a full-time, paid position that requires strong leadership, effective communication skills, and a deep commitment to enhancing the student experience. Candidates must launch campaigns and secure a majority vote to be elected. Once in office, the SU President serves as the student body’s voice, reporting concerns to the Board of Trustees on issues ranging from accommodation and academic life to mental health support. The SU President also ensures that campus social events are inclusive, well-organised, and impactful.
UPIC’s legacy of student leadership began in 2013, when Kosi arrived from Nigeria to study a Foundation in Computer Science. He became the first UPIC graduate to be elected SU President and has since gone on to thrive in the tech industry.
In 2015, Walter joined the Foundation in Business and Management course, inspired by glowing reviews of UPIC from friends in Nigeria. Just two years later, he was elected SU President, continuing UPIC’s growing legacy of leadership.

Fast-forward to 2022, Dindu Okechukwu arrived at UPIC to pursue a Foundation in Life Sciences. Now undertaking a BSc (Hons) Psychology degree, Dindu has been elected for a second term as SU President—a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication to student welfare.
In his campaign, Dindu expressed his deep motivation for serving the student body: “I am genuinely passionate about every student on this campus. I love our campus, I love our University, I love our city, and I’m going to work tirelessly to ensure that every student voice counts.”
Dindu made a significant impact during his first term, delivering keynote speeches, leading board meetings, and attending high-profile events. His standout moment was being invited to 10 Downing Street, where he represented the University and shared Plymouth’s story.
“It was incredible to connect with remarkable individuals, including government ministers and VIPs, and to explore the vital role of art in empowering this generation. As a proud ambassador of the University of Plymouth Students’ Union and our city, I shared our work with passion and pride. I discussed creative opportunities for young people and left truly inspired to serve even better,” Dindu said.
Jake Hutton, UPIC’s Student Experience Officer, shared his reflections: “It’s always inspiring to see the progress of our students. From day one, UPIC tutors equip students with the tools to strengthen their study skills. I organise regular social events to help students settle in, connect with peers, and build confidence. It’s been amazing to watch so many UPIC graduates step into leadership roles and make a real difference.”
At UPIC, building confidence and leadership is part of the student journey from day one. The college is proud to see its students take on challenges, grow into leaders, and shape the future of student life on campus.
