Curtin Singapore’s inaugural BioBlitz links business, science, and sustainability

Curtin Singapore recently hosted its first-ever BioBlitz, an exciting initiative that brought together students, researchers, and industry experts for a hands-on biodiversity discovery mission using cutting-edge environmental DNA (eDNA) technology.

Led by Associate Professor Paul Nevill from Curtin University’s School of Molecular and Life Sciences, BioBlitz not only deepened students’ understanding of conservation science but also highlighted the increasing commercial applications of biodiversity data. Industries such as environmental consulting, urban planning, agriculture, and sustainability management are leveraging eDNA technology for ecological assessments, regulatory compliance, and corporate ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting.

Through the hands-on workshops, students gained industry-relevant skills in eDNA sampling and analysis, enhancing their employability in fields where environmental intelligence is a growing business priority. They learned to collect, process, and interpret eDNA samples from various campus locations, mimicking real-world applications in environmental impact assessments, biodiversity monitoring, and corporate sustainability reporting. Students who completed the BioBlitz workshop will receive a Certificate of Participation, further strengthening their professional credentials in an evolving job market that values sustainability expertise.

Following its success in Curtin Singapore, the BioBlitz will expand to all Curtin University campuses by 2027 — a strong indication of Curtin’s commitment to industry-aligned, globally relevant education.
