Finding community through cricket at Laurier

For Wilfrid Laurier International College students Alaqmar and Humaiz, cricket has become an important part of their university experience, helping them build friendships, stay active, and feel at home while studying in Canada.

Originally from Pakistan, both students were eager to continue playing the sport they grew up with after arriving at Laurier. Through the university’s cricket team, they found a welcoming community and a strong sense of belonging.

Being part of the team has allowed me to make many friends and build strong relationships,” says Alaqmar. “In Canada, having good connections and a supportive community is very important.”

Their advice to future international students is simple: get involved. Whether through sports, clubs, or other activities, campus engagement is a great way to build connections and make the most of the university experience.
