Opening new doors for students in Germany: Navitas and Lancaster University

7th Feb, 2019   Feature story:

Navitas’ strategic drive to open new doors to students seeking to study abroad continues as they work with Lancaster University (LU) to establish and operate a new campus in Leipzig, Germany.

Following two new agreements in the Netherlands, this announcement continues Navitas’ expansion into exciting new European markets and extends its network of strategic collaborations with highly ranked institutions.

The Leipzig campus will offer LU degree programmes, with the university retaining responsibility over academic matters. Navitas will be responsible for the provision of leased premises and facilities for the campus, student recruitment, support services and administrative staff.

As part of its first phase of development, it is intended that the Leipzig campus will offer four LU accredited Bachelor of Science programmes taught by the university, and a Lancaster University accredited foundation programme delivered by Navitas. The initial term of the agreement is for 10 years until September 2029.

“This exciting new relationship continues our expansion into new European markets and opens up opportunities for domestic and international students in Germany to study at a globally renowned university. We are delighted to be supporting Lancaster University’s global ambitions and look forward to providing a positive and rewarding experience for students at this new campus,” said Navitas Group Chief Executive Officer, David Buckingham.

Lancaster University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith also welcomed the news:

”This will create Lancaster’s first campus in mainland Europe – an exciting prospect and one which I hope will bring new opportunities to ambitious students.

“Lancaster has always considered itself truly international with successful existing  partnerships overseas for campus operations in Malaysia, China and Ghana. We also have students from 100 different countries studying in the UK, and research partners in 60 countries, so we look forward to welcoming our new students to our thriving international community.”

World-class teaching and research

LU’s branch campus in Leipzig will engage in both teaching and research activities and further develop the university’s reputation for excellence.

Underlining its status as a top 150 world and top 10 UK ranked university, LU has been awarded a gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and 83% of LU research was rated as either ‘internationally excellent’ or ‘world leading’ in the latest Research Excellence Framework review.

Meeting growing demand

A centre of technological competence, innovation and global industry, Leipzig has high employability prospects, a vibrant student life and low cost of living. Germany is home to local students who want to work internationally and prefer to be taught in English, while experiencing the benefits of a university with a strong global reputation.

In addition, EU students and international students with longer-term aspirations look to Germany, and Leipzig, for opportunities that do not exist in their home countries. International students in Germany enjoy post-study work rights and the potential to transition to permanent residency, presenting appealing long-term prospects for international students.

LU and Navitas are planning a first student intake in September 2019 for the foundation programme, subject to the accreditation of that programme by the University and Navitas securing a lease for the campus premises.
